Behind the Scenes: Cooking Special

I’ve always loved cooking and baking. I was the small child who used to wake up and watch HGTV and the Food Network instead of cartoons. When I was in the 4th grade, my BFF Emily and I went to a cooking camp at our teacher’s house. She sewed us homemade aprons and compiled recipe books for us to cook through that week. I vividly remember learning how to make lasagna, which was promptly taste-tested and approved by Hobie! That week gave me the opportunity to really be in the kitchen on my own, and I haven’t looked back since.

I’m always looking for ways to incorporate things I love into “Chasing Down Madison Brown” and in season one I made my dad’s favorite chocolate cake. It was a huge hit and so I’ve incorporated recipes into the show from time to time when I think it makes sense. Then last year, I thought heck, why not do an entire special?!

It was so much fun for me to do, that we decided to go for it again this year. When I was thinking of recipes, I knew that I wanted to do something strawberry. Besides it being my favorite fruit, it’s always such a crowd pleaser. I remembered this great cake that my mom made when I was growing up and asked her for the recipe. Wouldn’t you know, when she sent it to me I recognized the font from my beloved 4th grade cooking camp. I know a good “full circle” moment when I feel one, and so on last night’s episode, I got to share a cake from the camp that helped me fall in love with the kitchen two decades ago. I hope that this recipe brings you as much joy as sharing it with everyone brought me!

    This cake looks so delish and I cannot wait to try it, I am looking for a place where I can print it out.

    I find your show very interesting, I grew up on a real farm, pigs, chickens, cows, sheep and of course my horse, dog & kittens. My parents have passed and we move back to my family home. I was adopted when I was 2 yrs. old by these wonderful parents, I am now 75. I watch your show every week, the verity of subjects are all interesting. Oh and I’m a Sawyer Brown fan, that is what got me to watch in the first place. Now I’m a Madison Brown fan.

    What did I do wrong!!!!! Made the strawberry cake—-it wouldn’t come out of the pan—-just in pieces!!! The pan was well greased! Enjoy your show!! We have been married 64 1/2 years—-My husband has a wonderful huge garden!! Tomorrow we are canning pickled beets! We share with family! We usually can 100+ qts of “V?” for our breakfast drink!!       Oh no Ruth!! This has happened to me when I added too much syrup in with the strawberries. It can make the mix too wet and then it won’t hold together properly. I hope that helps!
